Resources for teaching literacy hour

Many teachers look for different activities and resources for teaching literacy hour in Primary schools. From Reception class to Year 1 Year 2, Year 3 and above each class receives an hour of literacy teaching each day, which can concentrate on many areas of the English curriculum. Resources for teaching literacy hour can be games, worksheets, flashcards or lesson plan ideas. A key area for the early years is phonics. There are many resources for teaching literacy hour that help children to practise phonics. Some involve the children learning an action to go with each letter and sound e.g. ‘Jolly Phonics’ or a picture is associated with each letter e.g the ‘Letterland’ series. There are worksheets for practising letter formation, games to reinforce the sound symbol relationships of the letters.

For older children there are resources that cover areas of English grammar. The literacy hour is for the whole class, however, children may need to be set in groups and given different tasks according to their ability level. Some resources for teaching literacy hour are flexible and can be used with several ability levels. Many word building games and activities are structured so that children can play according to their ability. Games are a great way of making the literacy hour exciting and fun. There are resources for teaching literacy hour that are board games, card games, flashcards, verbal games, games involving actions, dice games and jigsaws. For key stage 1, 2 and above some of the areas of English to be explored include the use of punctuation, adverbs, adjectives, syllables, prefixes, suffixes, sentence construction, antonyms, synonyms, similes, metaphors and many more.
