Educational board games

Educational board games offer a wide variety of fun resources to help with the teaching of different topics such as literacy, maths and science. Most board games are aimed at the Primary age group of four to eleven year olds. Children love educational board games as they are a fun means to understanding new concepts. There are many Mathematics games for schools available that, for example, cover maths topics such as handling money, practising times tables,  learning about fractions, addition and subtraction practise, to name but a few. Educational board games that help with literacy can cover areas such as phonics, spelling, grammar and general word building activities. Use these as literacy games for the family and for dyslexia help with spelling.

One of the most famous board games for literacy is the family favourite ‘Scrabble’. Most importantly a board game must be fun, even if the content is educational. Competition is a popular element of children’s games, as most children like to know who is winning as they play a game. Being accessible to variety of ability levels is a useful component of educational board games. This allows a mixed ability group to enjoy a game together and to learn from each other. It also can encourage more able children to help those less able, especially where teamwork is needed within the game. This applies to ESL learning games too. Therefore, educational board games can play an integral part in home education within a family setting or within a classroom setting at school. Used in conjunction with written activities such as worksheets or other written tasks they can make a welcome break and a change.
