Children like games, so to help them learn maths why not use children’s maths games? Many children have a fear of maths and numbers that for some, with for example dyscalculia, can be very severe. For these children especially and for others with special needs such as dyslexia which can affect their mathematical abilities, children’s maths games are a great resource to use as children do not realise they are learning and are therefore much more relaxed and receptive. Children’s maths games can add a pictorial and a visual dimension to maths topics that can greatly aid understanding for children, especially at key stage 1 & 2 levels. Concepts such as place value, fractions, decimals and percentages are much more easily grasped when shapes and diagrams can be used to explain them and with maths games this is very easy to do.

Children’s maths games can be simple, ad hoc inventions using resources to hand, such as counting games using apples or oranges, money and shop games using household items like tins of beans and packets of crisps. For many children the kinaesthetic or touch element of these games help their understanding as they can physically move the objects around, something you cannot do with a worksheet. Other children’s maths games can be board games, card games and games based on well known formats such as Find A Pair, Bingo, Snakes & Ladders, Snap and more. Of course, children can also make up their own maths games using, for example, dice, counters, blank cards or boards. This not only helps their maths skills but also their creative and design skills.
